Tzavelena’s staircase is a historic site in the Acheron Straits standing out for its particular natural beauty and for this reason a walking path has been created which following the banks of Acheron leads through the Dalla Bridge to the Souli village of Samoniva from where one can visit the castle of Kiafa and Kougi or following another route can reach the gates of Hades.

Necromanteion of Acheron

The first known oracle of antiquity, dedicated to the god of the Lower World, it is located in a hill in the village of Mesopotamos, which is only 42 km away from Sivota. It is built close to the point where the rivers Pyriflegethon, Acheron and Kokytos that were the symbols of sadness, mourning and sorrow of death, join one another. It is known as the Nekromanteion of Acheron or the Necromantium of Ephyia by the homonymous Mycenaean colony which is within walking distance. According to Homer, this is the location from which Ulisses descended to the Lower World to meet Tiresias and receive by him an oracle regarding his return to Ithaca.

Ancient Elea

The fortified settlement east of the modern village of Chrysavgi of Souli Municipality, known as “Kastri of Veliani”, is located in a naturally fortified plateau at an altitude of 500 m. at the foot of Paramythia Mountains, and it is only 40 km away from Sivota. From here almost the whole Acheron – Kokytos valley which belonged to the ancient city could be controlled. Its history is enormous, and today, most of its tall city wall as well as several ruins of public buildings and private houses are preserved.

Ancient Theater of Dondoni

Ancient Dodoni has been a worship center of Zeus and Dioni and it is 80 km from Sivota. It was also a well known oracle of the ancient Greek world. It is located at a distance of about 2 km from the settlement of Dodoni of the Municipality of Ioannina, at the foot of Mount Tomaros, at an altitude of 600 m. Dodoni is one of the largest and best preserved ancient Greek theaters, with capacity of about 18,000 people.
